- Aramid Fiber Equipment
Aramid, also known as Kevlar (chemically named para-aramid), emerged in the late 1960s as a new type of high-tech synthetic fiber. It has advantages such as high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, lightweight, and high tensile strength. It is currently widely used in industries such as bulletproof security equipment, construction engineering, and electronic devices.
However, aramid materials have two major drawbacks:

They can melt when exposed to ultraviolet light.

They are prone to hydrolysis reaction, even when stored in dry environments, gradually causing degradation due to moisture absorption.
Therefore, aramid bulletproof equipment, such as bulletproof helmets and vests, should not be used frequently in environments with strong ultraviolet light or high humidity, as it would significantly reduce their safety and lifespan. In addition, the low reliability and short lifespan of aramid materials also limit their further application in the bulletproof manufacturing industry.
Moreover, high-quality aramid is more expensive compared to PE, costing an additional 30% to 50%. As a result, aramid bulletproof products have gradually been replaced by PE bulletproof products. Unless in unique environments or specific requirements, such as long-term high temperatures in Middle Eastern countries, it is recommended to use bulletproof equipment made of PE materials.

2. PE Fiber Equipment
The previously mentioned PE refers to UHMW-PE, which stands for Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene. It is a high-performance organic fiber developed in the early 1980s and is considered one of the three major new high-tech plant fibers along with polymer materials and aramid. The common plastic bags we encounter in our daily lives are actually made of PE, which has high reliability and is extremely difficult to melt, thus causing serious environmental pollution. However, it is precisely because of this characteristic that it has become an ideal material for the production and processing of bulletproof vests. In addition, it has features such as low temperature resistance, UV resistance, and abrasion resistance.
In terms of low-velocity bullet defense capability, UHMW-PE fiber bulletproof equipment performs about 30% better than aramid. In terms of high-velocity bullet defense capability, UHMW-PE fiber bulletproof equipment provides 1.5 to 2 times the protection compared to aramid. Therefore, PE is currently recognized as one of the most effective bulletproof materials.
However, UHMW-PE also has some drawbacks: its high-temperature resistance is not as good as aramid. The operating temperature of UHMW-PE bulletproof products needs to be controlled within 80°C (considering the temperature requirements of the human body and equipment, heat resistance up to 55°C). Once this temperature is exceeded, its performance will rapidly decrease, and it will melt when the temperature reaches around 150°C. In contrast, aramid bulletproof products can maintain their structure and high-quality bulletproof performance even in high-temperature environments of 200°C. Therefore, PE bulletproof products are not suitable for use in high-temperature environments.
Additionally, PE has less stress relaxation resistance compared to aramid. When subjected to continuous pressure, PE equipment will deform slowly. Therefore, complex-shaped equipment that requires regular load-bearing capacity, such as bulletproof helmets, cannot be made entirely of PE.
Furthermore, in addition to these characteristics, as mentioned earlier, PE is also much cheaper than aramid.
In conclusion, PE bulletproof equipment and aramid bulletproof equipment have their own advantages and disadvantages. It is recommended that consumers make reasonable choices based on their specific needs when selecting bulletproof products.
